Domestic engineer. Author. Burgeoning editor. And quite possibly certifiable. Believing every story can shine bright with a bit of tenacious tough love, R.E. Hargrave is thorough and to the point. An international bestselling author, she takes storytelling and manuscript polishing seriously, working with her authors and on her own creations to ensure they come to life, crawling from the pages and into the reader’s souls.
Hargrave lives on the outskirts of Dallas, TX and is married to her high school sweetheart; together they are raising three children. A native ‘mutt,’ she has lived in New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Alabama, Texas, and California. She is fond of setting her stories—which range from the sweet to the paranormal, to the erotic and horrific—on location in South Carolina and Texas.

I’ve read quite a few of Hargrave’s Novellas (I’ve yet to dive into the trilogy), and while I enjoyed Haunted Raine and it was extremely well written, as all her books are, it simply wasn’t my favourite.
The story was a great idea, and compelling, but this one felt like a novella. With her other works under 20k words, I’ve always been left reeling and wanting more, Haunted Raine felt like what it was a short story. It was the prefect length for what needed to be told.
The characters of Raine and Rick, plus their supporting cast were very real and likeable. Their fading relationship is something many readers could relate to, regardless of age. The move they make to work on the dilapidated house is something I have always wanted to do, so this aspect of the story really caught my attention. I wanted to work with them, give them my ideas, and to look at colour palettes. I’m no interior decorator, but I can have ideas, right?
A quick read that I hadn’t realised I was halfway through until I checked the percentage on my kindle, yet I felt there could have been more to the story.
The paranormal element adds that little bit extra to the story, that without, Haunted Raine wouldn’t have worked at all. It’s the glue that brings the characters together and keeps the reader entranced. That need to know what’s happening and how it’ll be resolved.
I felt the epilogue was a little rushed. Hargrave could have explored the links between the past and the present much more in my opinion, but again, it worked for the novella that Haunted Raine is.
While this is not my favourite of her books, I will continue to read and devour Hargrave’s words.
