Jack Robinson and Andy Stone are best friends, navigating their way through life in 90s London with a soundtrack of Britpop. Jack’s in his final year at university and still has no idea about what he wants to do with his life, while Andy’s a mechanic by day, a bit of a man-whore the rest of the time.

Adapting to a new place to live in a big city isn’t easy, especially when girls, alcohol, and hard work get in the way, but having your best friend with you every step of the way makes it that much easier… well, when you’re not ignoring each other.

Filled with laughter and heartache, Jack and Andy’s story is for everyone. A hint of romance, a solid friendship, and plenty of stupid mistakes. But, will they learn from them?

Arriving at my parking space, I stopped short when I saw my car. It was absolutely trashed; glass littered the ground around me from the shattered windows and the bricks that held it up off the ground seemed to mock me with their newness. It started to rain, lightly.

“Absolutely…  Unfucking…  Believable.” My words came out through clenched teeth as I once again rooted around in my pockets, this time for change for the phone box I could see across the road. “I can’t believe this,” I grumbled away to myself as I dialled Andy’s work number. “Hey, man, I really need your towing thing,” I said the second he answered.

“It’s called an ‘A frame’, you idiot, and what bit fell off this time, mate?” Andy was laughing at me. He always laughed at me and my car, taking the piss when bits happened to fall off her.

“Nothing fell off, you prick? Someone killed my car. They actually killed her, wheels and all! Can you come rescue what’s left of her?” I told him where I was, put the phone down to end the call, and walked back over to my car.

Despite the cold and wet, I sat on the damp curb; my parka coat pulled under my backside, and looked at my beat up old car. It wasn’t much, just a mangy old Ford Capri, but she was mine. The shitty stereo chewed up more tapes than it played and the seats weren’t too comfortable, but it was my car, my pride and joy. I just hoped Andy would be able to work his mechanical magic. Hearing a rumble, I turned to see the man himself turn the corner in his large 4×4. It was just as old as my car, but built like a damn tank.

“Fucking hell, Jack, that car has been well and truly violated, mate. I feel for you.” He clapped his huge hand down onto my shoulder. I cringed as pain radiated across my back. Andy was enormous, both in height and build. I was considered tall, at six feet one, but he dwarfed me. His work as a mechanic, coupled with his gym sessions created muscles out of his muscles, something he was quick to use to his advantage when chatting up the ladies, one of his favourite pastimes. Coupled with his dark hair, olive skin, and brown eyes, all the girl fell at his feet. Some even came back for seconds.

“Will you be able-,” His eyes were roaming against every broken, scratched and dented part of my beloved girl.

“I’m insulted, Jack. Once I’m done with her, she’ll be purring.” Andy’s shit eating grin was wide. As usual, he managed to make a simple sentence sound sexual.

“Let’s get started, but I can tell you now, this won’t be cheap, mate. You sure you’re up for it? It might just be worth finally weighing it in for scrap and getting something else.”

I just glared at him as we hooked the car up to the towing frame and headed back to the garage.

“Okay, maybe not then.”

M. B. Feeney is an army brat who finally settled down in Birmingham, UK with her other half, two kids and a dog. She often procrastinates by listening to music of all genres and trying to get ‘just one more paragraph’ written on whichever WIP is open; she is also a serious doodler and chocoholic. Writing has been her one true love ever since she could spell, and publishing is the final culmination of her hard work and ambition.

Her publishing career began with two novellas, and she currently has multiple projects under way, in the hopes that her portfolio of what have been described as “everyday love stories for everyday people” will continue to grow. Always having something on the go can often lead to block which eventually gets dissolved by good music and an even better book.

Her main reason for writing is to not only give her readers enjoyment, but also to create a story and characters that stay with readers long after the book is finished, and possibly make someone stop and think “what if . . . ”

Review:

Six short stories, all centred around a house and a mysterious chest. This is T. M. Franklin at her YA Paranormal/romance best!

Window:

I originally read this when it was first released, and this is my review from back then (I will edit at the end)

The touch of paranormal to what is a seemingly normal house makes for an interesting story. Chloe has always been linked to the house and the picture window in the living room. It shows her things. Thinks of the past, the present, and what could be.

Chloe, apart from her gift, is your average teenage girl who isn’t part of the ‘in crowd’ at school, preferring to spend her time with her best friend Miranda. Ethan, the boy who lives across the road whom she has a crush on, used to be their friend, but became big man on campus and decided to hang with the popular crowd. Chloe and Miranda are fine about this, until the house shows Ethan in danger.

What follows is a very sweet story about friendship and caring for others and hilarious Twitter conversations. Without spoiling the story, I will say it took me about an hour to read it and I loved every minute. The characters are likeable and relateable, even with the gift Chloe has, and the reader cares about them just as much as the house does.

I want a house like that, that makes me feel warm and fuzzy

*EDIT*

The way Franklin has extended and adapted this story to make it the beginning of a series is fantastic as she hasn’t lost the soul of the original story. It smoothly leads into the next without any hitches!

Timepiece:

Following on from the first book, Wren is new into town. After Chloe and Miranda become friends with her, and she’s having weird dreams about Chloe’s house, she begins to embrace her destiny – afterall, that is what it is.

By the end of this book, it’s still not completely clear why these things are happening to the teens in their town, but Franklin’s effortless writing style makes you want to keep reading until the very end so you have all the answers.

Gauntlet:

I think Beck, the main in this episode of The Talisman Chronicles, is my favourite character. He’s focussed on doing well at school and with his swimming, but there’s something about him, a serious side that is so endearing. What we don’t know, until this episode, is about his sister, and the crap he and his dad are going through with her and Beck’s mother.

While all that is going on, Beck is brought into the fold with the others and the prophecy. His destiny is explained to him, and it takes him a while to get used to it and his relationship with Wren. He’s a strong character with flaws that make him all the more relateable.

Mantle:

I have to admit. This episode was my last favourite (which I still enjoyed), but I can’t work out why. It still had the action and a lot more resistance from Maia to everything happening. She was the first to not just blindly accept what was happening to them all. I liked that about her as it made it feel that little more realistic, but there was something a little… off about her episode.

While a lot of questions left open by the previous episodes are answered in this book, more are created by the end of it which is frustrating in such a good way!

Shield:

Dylan has been a character readers have met a couple of times due to his knowing Chloe and Miranda at school, and then his dad becoming involved with the Order. When Dylan is given his gift, his dad wants nothing more to do with them, and orders Dylan not to either, but the draw is far too strong, for them both.

Dylan defies his dad and puts himself in danger, but eventually his dad realises he needs to do this, they ALL do.

Prison:

Once again, Chloe is the main in this episode, but by the time this one comes around, we can see how much stress she’s under and how tired she is by everything. All she wants to do is protect Ethan and others not in The Order while The Order prepare for the big fight.

Sadly, it seems that not everyone will survive the battle and this is weighing on Chloe and her friends worry about her.

Are The Order strong enough to band together and do battle?

All in all, this series is fabulous, and I couldn’t put it down. Not one episode slowed the flow of the entire story, and there were a couple of moments that shocked me as I hadn’t seen them coming. I’ve miss T. M. Franklin’s writing, and as ever, I need more!

They have a past. But will they have a future?

Leah Parker is resilient and hardworking. She’d always prided herself in maintaining a level head, even under pressure. Everything changes when she begins to see strange apparitions and hear ghostly voices on the morning of her birthday.
In a blink of the eyes, Leah’s life takes a drastic turn that spirals her into the unknown. Something is out to get her, but she’s unsure if she’s losing her mind, or the faces and demands of the dead are real. Unable to find the answers she needs, she has no choice but to rely on ex-best friend, Brandon Morris, for help.
But as she will soon discover, Brandon has his own secrets. Some of which defy logic and only add to the mystery surrounding Leah. And mix feelings between the two complicate matters by getting in the way of what they really want, and what they must do.
Can Brandon lighten the load on her by figuring out what or who wants her dead? Or will their past history get in the way of the storm brewing just beyond Leah’s grasp?

#1
“Are you scared of me? Is that it?” As if to make a point, he covered the distance between us in three short steps, and backed me off into the landing to the stairwell behind me, stopping only when our bodies were a few inches from coming into physical contact. The invigorating scent of his cologne invaded my nostrils, causing my mind to go into total and complete turmoil.
I shut down, unsure how to react. I hadn’t anticipated being cornered in a vulnerable spot where we were shielded from view. Normally, I was a sucker for guys who smelled as good as he did, but this was Brandon Morris. I couldn’t decide whether to lean closer and inhale slowly, or scream and push him away.
“Are you?”
I wanted to deny his accusation, but he could see the truth in my eyes. It was pointless to pretend as if he hadn’t just sent my heart into a race. By then he could see how badly I shook. I could not disguise it fast enough for him not to notice.
“Should I be?” I asked softly, fear forcing my voice to quake.
#2
Fighting the nausea threatening to consume me, I made a mad dash for alleyway’s entrance. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw something move. I shrieked and sprinted faster, almost colliding into the thin man who appeared out of nowhere in front of me. I managed to stop in time to crash into him, but as soon as I caught sight of his profile I regretted not plowing right through him.
He looked like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. Tall, long, and lanky, with shoulder-length white hair, unnaturally pale skin, and eyes that gave the impression of missing irises, he was no less horrifying than the black figure I’d seen at the stairwell or the ghostly woman in my bedroom. He was clad from top to bottom in dark clothing, which gave him all the more menacing feel. As he stood, staring at me in a way that communicated I was about to become food, I could have sworn my stomach dropped to my feet. This was no ordinary attacker. He didn’t have rape or mugging in mind, but something much more sinister.
#3
Movement several yards behind him caught my attention and I glanced around his left shoulder to the woods, noting the quick blur of a figure darting from behind one tree to another. Something was off about the way this person rushed by. It sparked a sense of familiarity that horrified me.
“Brandon, I don’t think we’re alone anymore,” I murmured as another flash of white scurried ever closer. It was too dark for me to determine who it was, but I was certain of one thing: we were being watched.
“What…?” The meaning of my words didn’t immediately dawn on him.
“Someone’s out there.”
Brandon spun around abruptly. He scanned the area briefly as he backed into me while sucking in air. His suddenly rigid posture warned me whoever was out there was not friendly.
Without a single word of explanation, Brandon turned to me and took my hand in his, pulling me down the path we’d used to get to the gazebo. He towed me along in a haste, leaving me no room to protest, or figure out what the hell was going on. A weird, high-pitched hissing sound emanated from somewhere behind us. It startled me and I was tempted to glance over my shoulder, but Brandon’s next words stopped me.
“Don’t look, Leah!” His tone was as serious as I’d ever heard it, which freaked me out even more. What was he so scared of?

Reluctance Excerpt

December 2011

So, Ms. “It’s MIZZ not MISS” Jones gave me this journal. Apparently writing my feelings down will help me deal with my ‘anger issues’ and the ‘depression’ I’ve been suffering since Jessie ended things between us.
I admit, I am angry, and have been for two months, but I’m not depressed. Yeah, I was hurt and shit, but now I’m just angry. All the time; an emotion I’m not used to feeling so much. Up until now, I’ve never done the ‘angry’ stuff; never even knew I had a temper as such.
She’s ‘advised’ me to start at the beginning as much as I can with these dumb entries. I don’t want to do it, but as we have to read them together at our weekly meetings, I have no choice. At least one entry a day. . . This whole thing sucks ass.
There’s no point starting at the very beginning, though; back then everything was good; real good. No, I think my seventeenth birthday is where I need to start this thing. . .
Aiden
Repentance Excerpt
When his mom first told him a British chick was coming to stay with them, Tyler had been like a shark tasting fresh blood. He was going to charm her into his bed, then let her head back home, he hadn’t forseen her coming back thanks to his brother knocking her up. What choice did any of them have but to have her in the house, this time permanently?
“Hey, where d’you go just then?” Anna’s question brought his attention back to the present. Once again he could feel the warm sand on his bare feet and her small form in his arms. He smiled down at her.
“Sorry, I was thinking about home.” He bent to capture her lips with his own. The kiss making his heart rate pick up as every other kiss they’d shared had done. When he boarded the plane back in Arizona, he’d never expected much to happen on his vacation. He’d planned on lounging on the beach during the day, and drinking in bars in the evenings, but as he was checking into his hotel, he’d spotted Anna struggling with her bags and from the moment he’d helped her into the elevator, his plans had changed.
Plans that had never included falling in love with someone in a two week period.

FROM DEAR DIARY
April 2012

Dear Diary,
God, you’d think that after all this time, I’d have a much cooler greeting than that!
I just wanted to say that I hate airports. Nothing to do, other than sit around, waiting… waiting… oh, and more waiting. What am I waiting around in the airport for? So nice of you to ask. I’m finally off to America (I’m doing a silent happy dance in my seat!) for six weeks. I never thought that my college would have arranged something like this to give a bunch of seventeen and eighteen year olds “life experience”. I mean, it’s not even a ‘proper’ exchange programme. No-one’s off to the U.K. to stay in my house in return. I just get to go and stay with a family I have never met before. Oh crap, now I’m getting nervous.
Oh well, it’s too late, flight’s being called.

My world changed when I met Bellamy Morgan.
Just one problem — she’s my little sister’s best friend.

I’m not “damaged.” No horrible childhood or demons in my past I’m trying to outrun. In fact, my family is ideal — funny, supportive and filled with couples that all follow “our” golden rule:
Find her. Protect her. Love only her, with everything you are, every day, for the rest of your life.
So why is it the mere thought of a monogamous relationship, more than one night with the same woman, sends me bolting in the other direction?
Because I hadn’t met Bellamy Morgan yet.
When I do cross paths with her, everything starts to slowly make sense. Why men change overnight — suddenly blind to all women but her, happy to hold her purse and watch corny movies.

JT
Going to fucking attack her. In the nicest way possible of course, but attack nonetheless.
She expects me to sit still, way over here, when I could be on her in one move? Sliding my tongue over the firm swells about to topple out of her top. Inching those little panties down her long, smooth legs to sink my face into her sweet, bare pussy.
Yeah, this isn’t gonna work for me. My baby’s smokin’ hot body is barely hidden, a few teasing strips of lace the only things standing between me and fucking nirvana. What kind of man would I be if I didn’t show her, Right. Now. How good I can make her feel?
And what has gotten into her? My sweet, shy, virginal Bellamy has gone all wildcat on me…not that I’m complaining, just wondering is all.
She knows I’m looking my fill; her cheeks flushed a beautiful, innocent pink, her chest rising and falling with her shallow breaths. God, I want her. Want to devour every single part of her, slowly the first time—memorizing all the trembles, whimpers and soft moans I know she’ll give me. Then start over, like a fucking savage—biting, sucking and tasting until she begs me inside her, never to leave.
I hear my own deep, frenzied breaths as I adjust my rock-hard cock, threatening to bust out of my zipper. Feeling the leak of pre-cum, the deep, pulling ache in my balls.
“Jefferson,” she purrs my name, uncrossing her legs only to sexily cross them again. “I see I have your undivided attention, so there’s a few things we need to discuss.”
“Do I want to eat you out? Yes.”
She gasps, as though offended, but the sheer lace betrays her, showcasing her nipples that harden into sharp little points, begging for my mouth.
Her lids droop lazily and a desire, need, matching my own shapes her raspy voice. “No, and don’t be so vulgar. We already talked about lying, so we won’t rehash that. We will, however, move on to other behaviors that need rectified. I believe in positive reinforcement and since you speak Mars and I speak Venus, we’re gonna learn to meet in the middle and speak Earth. Thus, my risqué ensemble.”
“I don’t care if we talk in Neptunish, so long as you keep wearing it. Or let me take it off you,” I practically howl, nearing my breaking point.
“The car,” she breezes right over my reasonable request and states in a no-nonsense voice. “I didn’t want it, and don’t feel comfortable having it forced upon me. Jefferson, what you need to learn is how to harness your protective, alpha instinct in a way that makes me want what you want. It’s called finesse. The fine line between turning me on so much that I can’t wait to make you happy and pissing me off so bad I want to slap you, again. Now, tell me what would be a better way to approach that type of thing next time.”
She brushes her long, auburn locks behind her shoulders, giving me an unencumbered view of her chest and beautiful, mouthwatering cleavage. And I’m supposed to think?
“Baby,” I try not to whine like a virgin with the tip already in, “I don’t know the answer. Help me out here, I’m dying.”
“Why did you insist on the car?” She may be trying to pull off “emboldened,” but her hand trembles as she lowers one thin strap of her top a few inches off her shoulder, baring just a hint of one swollen, dark pink areola. I groan in actual pain, shifting again to give my swelling cock some room to suffer.
“Because I care about you, very much, and the thought of your long bus rides with God only knows how many horny, ill-mannered men makes me crazy. With a car, you can sleep in, sit down and have a decent breakfast, toss your books in the backseat and give us more time to spend together. Time we currently spend chasing each other around town because of bus schedules, my job and miscommunication.”
That’s what you should have said, discussed with me before pulling into the dealership. Do you see the difference?”
“I see part of your nipple.” I scoot to the edge of the couch.
She shakes her head with an exasperated tsk and no, God, no…pulls the strap back up.
“Okay, I get it! Pull it back down, baby.”
“Try it. Pretend it’s yesterday and talk to me about your car idea.” She grins, thriving on my torture.
Any thought I’ve ever had about luring Bellamy out of her shell, building her comfort level to be physical with me…this is not what I had in mind. Leave it to my feisty lil’ woman to switch up the plans on me.
I begin to recite the same speech I just gave her, inserting a “please,” “whatever you want,” and “totally up to you” as often as I can. When I’ve said all I can possibly think of in a deep, sexy voice, I wait.
“Very good, babe. Remember that though next time you get some crazy idea on rearranging my life or bossing me into something. I don’t want lip service. I want mutual respect, and sexy assertion that I can’t resist, even when I’m clothed.” She dazzles me with a disarming smile…and lowers the left strap all the way down.
Fucking beautiful. Real, round, high, firm and topped with a rosy nipple of the perfect size. My chest vibrates with my approving rumble, my lips and fingers both twitching for a sample.
“Bellamy,” I warn her, feral and untamed, scooting closer, the very edge of the couch quickly disappearing.
“Stay put, Jefferson. I mean it. We’re not done. I’ll be paying the sales tax and the fee to register the car. And if things between us don’t work out, I’ll be giving it back.”
Precious. But wrong. So wrong. “The sales tax was paid as part of the deal. If paying to register it makes you happy, fine. As for the other,” I slowly inhale, weighing the consequences, and decide to go on, “I don’t want to think about us not working out.”
“I don’t either,” she smiles sweetly. Glad she agrees because not working out simply isn’t an option. “You’re quite the quick study, Jefferson.” Her hooded, jade eyes hold my gaze prisoner as she slips the right strap down over the tan slope of her shoulder. Her whole, gorgeous chest is bared to me now, skin flushing under my unwavering, lascivious stare.
My girl is stacked. If I wasn’t a “boob guy” before…I sure as hell am now.
“Baby, damn. I have to touch you,” I growl, starting to rise.

Review – Penance and Promises – L. A. Cotton

Seven years ago, Ana Parry walked into Chastity Falls Academy and changed the lives of Jackson Pierce and Braiden Donohue. Her arrival set into motion a series of events that none of them could have ever predicted.

But they got out.

Escaping Chastity Falls, they left behind a life built on lies and secrets, danger and fear.

… Didn’t they?

Penance will be served, promises will be made.
Welcome to the end of Chastity Falls.

Review:

Red Stars 4

Well, it’s finally over. I have left Chastity Falls for the last time and it’s a bit bittersweet.

While it was great to have another book, it was only a novella and let’s face it. That’s not enough to revisit these characters. It’ll never be enough.

Jackson and Ana are happily settled, until Braiden and Cara show up. While Ana loves Cara, but she’s still unsure and wary about Braiden – who can blame her after everything he did back in college? Even if he is trying to change his ways because of his feelings for and new relationship with Cara.

But, naturally, Braiden’s past catches up with him – and Jackson. Althought Jackson still has his reservations about Braiden and how much he has ‘really’ changed, he still has the loyalty to their long-standing relationship as brothers and best friends, so he helps Braiden in protecting Cara.

Reading more about these characters and being invited back into their lives is like meeting up with a friend you haven’t met up with for a while and talking as if no time had passed at all between you. Cotton knows and loves these characters so much it’s clear in her writing that she cares about how they’re presented to the reader, even when they’re being total assholes. She wants us to love them, and make it hard for us to say goodbye.

Chastity Falls has ended, but so many readers I’ve spoken to have ideas as to what is happening to them after the book has closed. We care about them and want them to live on, even if there are no more books about them.

A great ending to what has been a fabulous series, one that I will re-read more than once.

My world changed when I met Bellamy Morgan.
Just one problem — she’s my little sister’s best friend.

synopsis

Just one problem — she’s my little sister’s best friend.

Embody is a spin-off, STANDALONE novel from the bestselling Evolve Series.

Pre-Order Tour & Giveaway – Terra Nova – Christine Hart

TERRA NOVA

Book #3 of The Variant Conspiracy

by Christine Hart

Editor & Publisher: Soul Mate Publishing

Official Genre: NA Paranormal Sci-Fi Romance

The end of humanity and an unrecognizable future Earth are now days away. After their first glimpse of the Terra Nova virus, Irina and her variant friends know their former employer’s plans are almost at hand. Their failed attempt to publicize Ivan and Innoviro Industries’ horrific activities has left them utterly reliant on their own wits and weapons.

After surviving a catastrophic earthquake in San Francisco and destroying a secret viral testing facility, Irina’s crew has traveled by a variant portal to London. On the other side of the world, they begin tracking when and where Terra Nova will be unleashed on the world. They know stopping Terra Nova is only the beginning of unraveling Ivan’s plans to reinvent the planet, but if they can’t stop this virus, there will be no one left to save.

Faith returned with four glowing green drinks in a cup holder tray. Clear plastic cups, lids, and straws let the liquid inside glow through. It smacked of something that would spawn ninja turtles. “These are the Incinerator’s own toxic spills. They’re just vodka and sprite with a capful of that crap they put in glow sticks. Did you know you can drink that shit?”

Jonah reluctantly took a plastic cup. “Are you sure we should drink it?”

“It’s not going to kill us. No more so than the alcohol.” Ilya picked up a cup and took a long generous pull on his straw.

I took an experimental sip. It tasted like vodka and sprite. There was a mildly synthetic aftertaste, but nothing toxic. I took another, much larger sip. Aha – the warmth I’d been craving since my shower. I might stand a chance of sleeping tonight after all.

Jonah followed my lead and took a slurp on his straw, pausing to let the liquid do its work. He leered at me with a devilish grin and grabbed my hand, pulling me off to the dance floor. His touch radiated energy into me, right through my skin waking up every cell in my body.

He leaned down and kissed me, running his hands through my hair. His powerful grip felt restrained, as though his mind fought to control his body. The intensity surpassed our first night together. After we had spent so long mocked by his unstable mutation, first hurting me and then nearly killing him, we were both finally stronger than ever.

“I can’t help myself. I need to touch you. I don’t ever want to let you go. We’re going to make up for some lost time tonight.” His lips brushed my ear as he spoke. His fingers traced the line of my neck and it sent shivers down my spine. So much for sleep!

In Irina’s Cards is the story of 19-year-old Irina Proffer who discovers a world of fringe genetic science and supernatural mystery. Following visions inspired by a strange deck of tarot cards, Irina learns of an amazing variation in her genetic code. She has the ability to see the past, present and future, in her life and the lives around her.

Irina sets out from her northern home for BC’s coastal capital to get answers. She is drawn in by a powerful first love and a compelling, yet dangerous mystery. Working at Innoviro Industries and meeting other ‘variants’ brings Irina closer and closer to the dark truth about her origins. She finds herself at the heart of two overlapping love triangles as she scrambles to escape her employer’s grip. At the close of the novel, Irina realizes she has merely scratched the surface of a frightening conspiracy on a global scale.

“You know what they say about the people here in Victoria, right?” said Jonah, as he watched me watch everyone else.

“No, I can’t say that I do. More money than they know what to do with?”

“True, but not as bad as Vancouver. Ever heard of the saying ‘newlyweds and nearly deads’ or as my mom says, ‘God’s waiting room.’”

“Kind of a dark way to look at things, isn’t it?”

“My mom’s a dark lady, but hilarious. I hope you don’t mind, but I also invited Cole and his sister. You’ll love this little restaurant. It’s got awesome food and live music, but not too hipster-ish,” said Jonah.

Something dropped in my chest. If Cole brought his sister, we were just a group of friends going for dinner. I felt silly for having thought that we were going on a date. We turned another corner and Jonah pulled the car over next to a brick building with a 50’s style neon sign that read ‘Cymbals’ next to a caricature of a drum set. I followed Jonah through the wrought iron gate and looked up at the oak tree on the lawn next to the patio. Tiny fresh leaves and new buds covered the gnarled old tree. It was also home to dozens and dozens of sneakers, canvas shoes, skate shoes, oxfords – basically any kind of shoe with laces to tie together.

The air felt warm enough to linger, so I walked over to the tree and looked upward. I smiled. I reached up to one of the lower branches and touched one of the shoes. The yard and the tree melted away. I saw the face of a girl with faintly bluish skin and platinum hair. She turned and I saw two leather-like wings flex and relax. Her shirt had been cut to make room for her wings which stretched out past the frayed edges of the fabric. She was standing in a sewer or catacomb.

Faces milled around the winged girl. It wasn’t quite like a party, maybe more like a camp. An older lady standing next to the winged girl reached down to the ground. She pinched the concrete and plucked something, maybe a stone, off the surface. The stone wriggled. It was a camouflaged beetle, exactly like the one I’d seen on my first day in the city. She lifted the beetle to her mouth and I reeled back.

The yard outside Cymbals surrounded me again in a blink. Jonah stared at me. I noticed my arm had stayed raised beneath the shoes and withdrew it.

“Are you all right?”

Irina and her renegade variant friends are scrambling to pick up the trail of their former employer, Ivan, and his globally catastrophic scheme. After strategically sharing their story with the media, the group heads south from Vancouver to Seattle hoping to recruit more experienced—and lethal—variants to their cause.

Their attention develops a laser focus on an engineered disaster mere days ahead of them. Ivan is using what staff and resources remain of Innoviro Industries to set off a violent earthquake in San Francisco. While they fight to stop the earthquake, Irina pushes the love of her life Jonah as far away as she can, trying to keep his unstable genetic degradation in check.

Irina’s friends think they’ve seen the worst that Innoviro could bring forth by the time they reach a secret facility in the Mojave Desert. As they near the property, the group uncovers a horror none of them had ever imagined.

I awoke standing on an orange cliff under a purple sky. An unfamiliar canyon wound under the horizon on either side. I looked down to see a river of metallic sludge oozing along the canyon floor. Chunks of debris floated in the sludge. Steam intermittently bubbled here and there. The sky darkened as I watched the river. Lights streaked across the sky, red and white, blinking. Black pellets fell from the lights, exploding in the distance as they hit the ground.

A figure walked through the smoke left by an explosion on the cliff directly opposite from me. While the smoke cleared, Ivan reached the edge of the cliff. His face distorted with a ripple. He reached up with both arms, burying his hands in his hair. His fingertips pulled on his scalp. Ivan’s expression melted. He peeled off his face in a downward motion taking the rest of his body with it. In Ivan’s place stood a red-eyed humanoid reptile with giant curling horns, identical to what I’d seen reflected in the window of Ivan’s apartment.

The horned figure let out a ferocious roar. The ground shook. The landscape shivered until the canyon transformed into a green valley below dry sage-covered hills. Ivan seemed himself again, smiling and tapping his wristwatch, strolling toward me. I shuddered, shaking my head. The green grass floor trembled and a crack opened horizontally between us. Trembling turned to shaking. The crack ripped into the ground in both directions until a canyon separated us.

A hand brushed my cheek. I whirled to find the source of the touch. I found myself lying in bed back in the guest bedroom in Josh’s farm house. I shouted and sat up.
